Review by Sectur Merlo

The album "The Human Arts Ensemble Live Vol I" by Human Arts Ensemble is a masterpiece of jazz music. The ensemble's unique blend of African rhythms, free jazz, and avant-garde experimentation creates a sound that is both exciting and challenging. The album is a live recording of the ensemble's performance at the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival in 1972, and it captures the energy and spontaneity of their live shows.

The album features a range of compositions, from the African-inspired "Bolivar Blues" to the free-form improvisation of "Liberation." The musicianship on the album is exceptional, with each member of the ensemble contributing their own unique voice to the music. The interplay between the musicians is particularly impressive, with the ensemble members constantly pushing and challenging each other.

About The Human Arts Ensemble

The Human Arts Ensemble was a 1970s musical collective operating in St. Louis. Members explored free jazz and loosely associated themselves with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and the Black Artists' Group (BAG) collective. It was formed in 1971 with the idea that performers could perform in the ensemble, without restrictions as to the performer's race. Additionally, public funding had ended for musical associations that were suspected of having connections with radical organizations. It disbanded in 1977.
